Dec 31 2007 by Our Correspondent, Daily Post

WHEN the family of a popular eisteddfod soloist decided to release a CD in her memory little did they realise that demand would exceed all expectations. Within a matter of days of the Oes o Gan (Lifetime of Song) CD being launched in early December, all 250 copies had been sold. Now, sales of the CD in memory of soprano Katie Wyn Jones, of Dinas Dinlle, near Caernarfon, are fast approaching 1,000. Proceeds from the sales go to T Gobaith hospice and St Twrog’s Church, Llandwrog.

Welsh Carols with Brass (featuring Côr Seiriol and Beaumaris Band)

Carols are not only amongst the earliest examples of Welsh song but are also popular songs, widely sung and appreciated within a living tradition. This collection draws on every aspect of this rich body of work. Early examples include 'Myn Mair' believed to have been written in the Middle Ages and 'Plygain' carols that are borne of an unique tradition within the Welsh church. Some of the great Victorian classics are here, as well as some relatively contemporary carols by our foremost composers and arrangers, including 'Doethion a Bugeiliaid' by William Mathias. Many of these arrangements with brass have been prepared especially for this recording and are performed here by two of the most distinguished musical names in Wales.

    Caernarfon Male Voice Choir: ‘COFIO’

This recording celebrates the fortieth anniversary of the Caernarfon Male Voice Choir. Since it’s inception it has forged its own unique place amongst the foremost vocal ensembles in Wales. However it remains as firmly rooted in it’s community as ever and during this time of celebration, the opening verse of ‘Cofio’ - a setting of the poem by Waldo Williams, seems particularly relevant.....

    ‘Cofio’ (Remembering) : Waldo Williams

Before the sun has left the sky, one minute,
One dear minute, before the joumeying night,
To call to mind the things that are forgotten
Now in the dust of ages lost from sight.

It’s been a year of celebration for one of North Wales’s foremost Male Voice Choirs. Y Traeth Male Voice Choir was established forty years ago in the Benllech area on Anglesey. A number of events have been held to mark the occasion and in March a book was released detailing the history of the choir. However the celebrations recently reached their climax with the release of a new CD – ‘Dathlu Deugain’ (Celebrating Forty).

It was the Anglesey Eisteddfod in 1969 that provided the initial impetus to form the Choir. At first there were only fourteen members under the direction of Mrs Magdalene Jones, a local teacher and the wife of poet, Dewi Jones. Since then the choir has had nine different conductors, the most recent being Annette Bryn Parri. On the other hand, throughout this time there has only been two accompanists as the present accompanist, Grês Pritchard MBE has been at the piano since 1970.
