Hiraeth i'r Awelon is a song about sleepless nights, regrets, and ruminations. Centring around the character of a girl experiencing these feelings at night and unable to drift off, her head spinning with thoughts about her life, the world and her relationships.
At night, these kinds of thoughts can be relentless and uncontrollable, and they can spiral. Regretting things said to a loved one, white lies, dark truths... Memories from her past that might seem insignificant to everyone else compound into something massive and all-encompassing. "Gwleidyddiaeth mor greulon" (Such cruel politics) expands these thoughts to include the world at large, injustices, tensions, and existential threats.
Eventually, the chorus sees her move past these spiralling thoughts and let go of her longing, letting it wash away in the breeze.
With the support of the Lŵp x PYST Video Fund a promotional video of the song has been produced by Meilyr Rhys. This was shot in the atmospheric setting of Plas Talysarn near Dorothea Quarry in Dyffryn Nantlle. The overgrown ruins of the location provide the perfect context for contemplation suggested in the song.
