Torri Fi - Maddy Elliott
Track of the week on Radio Cymru, week starting 30/09/24
A new Welsh artist, Maddy Elliott is about to release her first EP "Torri Fi" on Friday the sixteenth of August. Based in the small village of Llanfair Talhaiarn, Maddy has just completed a year of working in the music industry as part of her music degree at York University.
Maddy worked at Aran Studios supporting other artists such as Alis Glyn and gained experience of hosting events by also working for Beacons Cymru.
On the first track, Torri Fi is heavily influenced by 80's pop music with bright synth lines and catchy lyrics. The second track of the EP - "Gwahanol" or 'Different', shows the influence of modern jazz and funk, with a groovy bass line and saxophone riffs.
Through the help of Pyst and Lŵp a video will be available to support the track 'Torri Fi'. The video was prepared by director Meilyr Rhys following the premiere of his first short film 'Y Pitch' at Chapter, Cardiff at the beginning of July.
The inspiration for the song is the story of the character 'Ophelia' in the play 'Hamlet' by Shakespeare. The EP cover (above) tries to emulate the iconic painting of Ophelia done by John Everett Millais, which in turn was the starting point of the video treatment.
Maddy has been developing her set by performing around North Wales in pubs and other small venues. In early September of 2024 she had the opportunity to step onto a bigger stage as she appeared at a Welsh Festival called "Gŵyl 7" and shared the stage with the Candelas.
